When discussing down comforters and cushions filled with real goose down, we often think about the quality of the raw materials, their origin, and the methods by which they are sourced. Let's take a moment to clarify the feathers and down used by Punto Piuma Home. We care about both the well-being of our consumers and the animals from which we obtain the feathers to make our comforters and fillings. The selection of feathers is a crucial step that requires expertise and experience in the industry.
What are the main types of feathers?
The down or "fluff" is the most valuable part of a goose's plumage. Its structure consists of a tiny central nucleus from which soft filaments extend. This part of the plumage is the most precious because it has excellent thermal-regulating properties.
Next is the "small feather," which also has strong thermal-regulating abilities. It is less light than down and features a small stem or quill that gives it elasticity.
In contrast to the first two types, the "feather" is larger, with a central quill from which filaments extend. Due to its particular elasticity and resistance, it is preferred for cushioning in seats and sofas.
Unfortunately, some dishonest producers sell mixtures as down and feathers, which are actually shredded chicken feathers combined with goose feathers. These mixtures not only lack the same warmth-giving ability but are also significantly heavier. At Punto Piuma Home, we use only the finest down, sourced from certified farms that comply with current European regulations. This includes five European certifications: two related to fabrics and three related to feathers.
Where do the feathers come from?
The quality and warming capacity of down are significantly influenced by the origin of the animals. Animals from farms located in colder countries such as Northern Europe, Siberia, and Canada provide denser, softer, and more valuable down because the animals themselves produce a superior quality of plumage due to the colder climate.
What are the approved methods for sourcing feathers?
In full respect of animal welfare, we remind you that feathers can only be sourced in two authorized ways. The first method involves collecting the plumage of animals that have already been slaughtered for meat, which would otherwise be discarded. The second method involves gently brushing the animals during their natural molting period.
It is not permissible to kill animals solely for their feathers, and it is absolutely forbidden to pluck animals alive using inhumane methods that cause suffering. All the farms from which we source our raw materials are strictly monitored and certified in accordance with international standards.
