The differences between a topper and a pillow top

Bed environment

In recent years, the terms "topper" and "pillow top" have become quite popular in Italy and beyond. However, these two products are often mistakenly considered synonymous. Let's clarify their main characteristics.

Topper characteristics

Highly requested by our customers, a topper is a soft mattress pad, usually about 5 cm thick, placed on top of the mattress to increase comfort. At first glance, it may look like a regular duvet, but its more compact dimensions and specialized fastening systems suggest a different purpose. At Punto Piuma Home, we offer toppers with either goose down or Aerelle polyester filling, using only the highest quality materials to ensure optimal supportbreathability, and the right amount of warmth.

The benefits of using a topper can be numerous, with the most notable being:

Rigidity corrector: have you ever bought a mattress that was too firm, thinking that rigidity was synonymous with comfort and durability, only to find it uncomfortable for sleeping? Before discarding it (or losing sleep over it), simply add a comfy topper to increase softness and comfort.

Temperature corrector: for couples who have different warmth preferences but sleep in the same bed, a topper can be a great solution. You can place a single topper only on the side of the colder sleeper, thus avoiding those "blanket wars."

Sag and dip corrector: sometimes, people use two single mattresses to make bed movement and room cleaning easier, but end up with that annoying dip between the mattresses. A topper can serve as a perfect leveling solution, making it comfortable even for couples with separate mattresses. It also works well for dealing with the central dip that develops from wear in certain mattresses.

Insulating and protective: a topper protects the mattress from stains and can be easily washed. The version with soft goose down filling helps prevent moisture from seeping into the mattress, preserving its quality and extending its lifespan. Additionally, the insulation prevents heat from dissipating from the body.

The pillow top

Now, let’s look at the pillow top, a product often confused with the topper but with distinct features and functions. Unlike the topper, a pillow top is much thinner and is typically made by mattress manufacturers and sold by them. It is a mattress cover, usually made from memory foam, that is attached to the surface below by a zipper.

Its functions are more limited compared to a topper. It serves as a good rigidity corrector but, due to its thinness and filling, it does not provide breathability, regulate temperature, or correct mattress dips.

A pillow top is mainly a thicker mattress cover and serves as a good way to protect the mattress from stains. In summary, the main function of the pillow top is to increase the comfort of the bed, offering more softness and body adaptability.

When shopping for one of these products, it’s important to choose the one that best meets your needs. As we often say at Punto Piuma Home, everyone sleeps differently. Therefore, the solutions for a good night’s sleep should be tailored to each person’s specific needs.
